Smoking adds a unique sensory dimension to your drink. The smoke infuses additional aroma and flavor, enhancing the complexity. Depending on the type of wood used, you can introduce sweet, spicy, earthy or even a campfire notes into your drink.
-
That's the best part, it's up to you! Adding smoke to your cocktail is a matter of taste and that's also why there are different flavors of smoke to choose from. To start, we suggest letting your cocktail sit covered in the glass for approximately 30 seconds. From there you can judge if you'd like a shorter or longer smoke.

Yes, when done correctly. You should only use only Food-Safe wood chips and a high quality mesh filter.
All of Skull & Cinder's Premium Wood Chips are food safe and contain no chemicals or glues. Our double mesh filters capture the maximum amount of burnt cinder while still allowing maximum smoke to pass through the filter and into your drink.

No. Smoking affects aroma and flavor only. Alcohol content remains the same.

Absolutely! Smoking is meant to enhance and enrich the beverage and it doesn't have to be limited to alcoholic drinks. Check out some of our Non-Alcoholic Recipes here.

Smoke the glass: Trap smoke in an empty glass before pouring the cocktail. This will help to infuse the smoke deeper into the drink when you pour into a smoky glass.
Smoke the finished drink: Cover the drink with a Skull & Cinder smoker and infuse smoke directly on top of the drink for a bold aroma and extra presentation.
Smoke the ingredients: Smoke the syrup, garnish, or spirit itself before mixing. You can also add smoke to a cocktail shaker and shake the smoke into the drink. Don't be afraid to try smoking more than just wood chips. Rosemary is a popular herb to smoke and adds a different layer of depth to many of our Non-Alcoholic recipes. -
Yes, you can. Certain cocktails have more delicate flavors and a robust smoke can overpower the subtle notes of the drink. It's best to experiment with how much smoke you like with each drink and try different varieties of wood chips to find what you enjoy the most. You can always add more smoke if needed.
-
You do need to use a torch to properly ignite the wood chips and produce the best possible smoke. A lighter or pocket torch to light a cigarette/cigar doesn't have the heat needed to quicky burn the wood chips and you'll lose the majority of your smoke into the air instead of it travelling down into the glass.
The torch should reach at least 1300°C and produce a solid blue flame.
Our recommended Torch is available for purchase in our Shop.

At Skull & Cinder we care about providing a quality product that's safe to use. Multi-species smoking boards typically have 2 or more different wood's glued together and that poses a serious health risk in our belief. Ideally you wouldn't let the torch burn close to the glue joint, but if you do, then you'll be releasing chemicals from the glue into the smoke you're producing which ends up in your glass or drink. Most wood glues are rated as food safe, since they're used in cutting boards and charcuterie boards, and rated as non-toxic for food contact. However, that rating is for contact with cured glue, not the chemicals released when the glue is burnt at a high temperature.
At Skull & Cinder we don't believe you should be smoking your cocktail with smoke generated from burning glue.
